What We Miss

Published by Sonia Vale on

There are days when life becomes a checklist.

Wake up.

Answer the emails.

Run the errands.

Fold the laundry.

Cross another item off the list.

By the time evening arrives, we’ve been busy all day, yet somehow we’ve been absent from most of it.

Not because we wanted to be.

Because life is loud.

And loud things have a way of convincing us they’re the only things worth our attention.

The quiet things rarely ask for it.

The first bird that greeted the morning.

The scent of fresh coffee drifting through the kitchen before anyone else was awake.

The way sunlight lingered across the dining room table for only a few minutes before moving on.

The butterfly that landed in the garden, unnoticed except by the flowers.

The breeze that carried the smell of summer through an open window.

None of those moments demanded to be seen.

They simply arrived.

And just as quietly… they left.

Perhaps that is what we miss most.

Not the grand adventures.

Not the once-in-a-lifetime moments.

But the thousands of small ones that quietly stitched together an ordinary Tuesday.

The conversation we hurried through.

The laughter we almost didn’t hear.

The hand we held without realizing it might one day become a memory.

The familiar view from the porch that we assumed would always be there.

Life doesn’t disappear all at once.

It slips gently through the spaces where we weren’t paying attention.

I’ve begun to believe that a beautiful life isn’t measured only by the extraordinary things we experience, but by how fully we inhabit the ordinary ones.

Not every sunrise will stop us in our tracks.

Not every cup of coffee will become a cherished memory.

Not every quiet afternoon will change our lives.

But every one of them offers us a chance to be present.

To notice.

To pause long enough for life to leave its fingerprints on our hearts.

Perhaps that’s all this little corner of The Butterfly Hearth hopes to be.

A gentle reminder that beauty rarely shouts.

It whispers.

And sometimes, all it asks of us… is to notice before the moment slips away.

Until next time… keep noticing.
